Old Man's Mirror
Dutch / Nepali Art and Photo-exhibition in Briddhashram near Pashupatinath in Kathmandu, Nepal.

The Dutch artist and photographer Noud Verhave is touched by the beauty and strength of old people in his home country. In Amsterdam he works on an artproject in a nursing house. When he visited Nepal in February this year he was extremely moved by the inhabitants of the Briddhashram (a house for elderly homeless and often disabled people) in Kathmandu. Verhave came in contact with them and got permission to take photographs of some of the people there.
Now he is back in town to show these large photos (1.00 x 1.50 m) in an exhibition on the walls inside Briddhashram.

In Briddhashram elderly homeless people found a home and a new 'family'. In spite of old age and the severe handicaps of some of them, they exude power, vitality and inventiveness. That is what Verhave want to express in this Mirror's project: "We, as 'young' spectators, can look in the mirror of our own old age. What would that be and what do we want at that time? And what about all the old and helpless people outside a place like the Ashram???"

In this project Verhave works together with a group of young Nepali artists (Bikrant Man Shresta, Mani Kumar Thing, Rajan K.C. and Ganesh Nepal) and also with the group artists associated with the Art For Caring Project. They also show work related to the theme.
Mr. Sashi Bikram Shah, the respected Nepali artist and principal of the Sirjana College of fine arts supported the project.

The opening of the exhibition took place on Saturday 29 October 2005 2.00 p.m. The photo's in the Briddhashram can be seen until may 2006.
On Friday 28 October there was a workshop in drawings with the elderly, living in the Briddhashram guided by the artists. Visitors can also see their work.
